Transgender & Non-Binary/Genderqueer Participant Policy
Effective March 3, 2020
- Goal
Life Time, Inc. (“Life Time”) has adopted this Transgender & Non-Binary/Genderqueer Participant Policy to support and facilitate transgender and non-binary/genderqueer participant competition in Life Time events in a way that is both fair and inclusive. Life Time respects the personal rights and dignity of all participants as well as the integrity of competition for awards, results, and records. - General Rules
A male-to-female transgender participant may register to compete as a female provided the participant can provide documentation (see Life Time Medical Clearance) has been undergoing continuous, medically-supervised hormone treatment for gender transition for at least one year prior to the date of the race.
A female-to-male transgender participant can register to compete as a male with no restrictions. A female-to-male transgender participant can no longer register to compete as a female if they have begun hormone treatment related to their gender transition.
A non-binary/genderqueer participant can register to compete as the gender option they identify with during race registration. If a participant registers as a non-binary/genderqueer participant, they may not be eligible for some awards and prizes offered in conjunction with races, in accordance with this policy. - Policy Enforcement
A participant’s self-declared gender at registration will be accepted at face value. The sole reason for this policy is to facilitate fairness regarding competition for awards and records. Therefore, there shall be no basis for, or tolerance of, any challenge to a participant’s self- declared gender unless a top 10 finish or age group winner award is at stake. A challenge under this policy may be initiated only by another registered participant (a) in the same Life Time event as the participant being challenged, and (b) who stands to benefit directly from the challenge by either (i) moving up in the top 10 finish standings (i.e., a participant who also finished in the top 10), or (ii) moving into the top 10 finish standings (i.e., the 11th place finisher).
Any such challenge must be made in person or writing to the Race Director within 30 minutes of the end of the awards ceremony. All challenges must be initiated in good faith, consistent with the purpose of inclusion and fairness under this policy, and treated with the utmost discretion and respect for the privacy and dignity of all parties involved. Life Time (via the Race Director or the Race Director’s authorized designee) has the sole authority either to review or not review any challenge initiated under this policy. - Gender Status Review
In the event of a challenge, Life Time may, in its sole discretion, ask the participant for documentation from a qualified healthcare provider certifying that the participant has undergone continuous, medically-supervised hormone treatment for gender transition for at least one year prior to the race (see Life Time Medical Clearance). Transgender participants, at their option, may provide the medical documentation related to their gender transition to the Race Director prior to the race. Life Time will endeavor to preserve the privacy of all information provided pursuant to this policy (including, without limitation, information about the participant’s gender identity and medical information) to the maximum extent possible.
All decisions regarding a participant’s challenge initiated under this policy or the participant’s gender status for purposes of effectuating this policy shall be within the sole discretion of Life Time. All determinations by Life Time under this policy shall be final and binding and non- appealable. If it is determined that the participant is not in compliance with this policy, the participant will be allowed to keep their Life Time finisher’s award, but any top 10 finisher or age group winner status shall be relinquished, and the associated awards shall be returned to Life Time. - Changes to this Policy
Life Time reserves the right to update or modify this policy at any time. If we make changes, we will post the revised policy with a “Last Updated” date at the top of the policy reflecting the date of the change. All changes are effective as of the time of posting. Without limitation to the effectiveness of the changes, your participation in any Life Time event following the posting of any updated or revised policy constitutes acceptance of those changes.
